BIST is a private foundation governed by a Board of Trustees composed by nine researchers of international reputation, the seven directors of the BIST Community Centres, three private foundations and the Goverment of Catalonia.

The Board of Trustees appoints the Director General, who runs the BIST Institution. The Director General, along the seven directors of the BIST Community Centres, form the Executive Committee, which oversees the BIST strategy and coordinates with and among the research centres with the support of the Centre`s Managing Directors. The Director General manages a small BIST Core Team which with the collaboration of BIST Community’s Commissions, Taskforces and Working Groups, develops the initiatives approved by the Board of Trustees. The commissions and working groups, shown in the figure above, meet throughout the year to drive the BIST agenda by planning and executing joint activities within and across their respective areas.
