The first “Open Science: Zinc and COVID-19, what do we know so far?”, organised by the Department of Experimental and Health Sciences at Pompeu Fabra University (DCEXS-UPF) with the support of the QUAES-UPF Chair and the Hospital del Mar, will take place on Monday , March 29 at 6:00 p.m. online . The activity is open to the general public and free of charge, and those registered will receive a link to connect the day before the event.

In a relaxed atmosphere, Rubén Vicente (Pompeu Fabra University) and Robert Güerri (Hospital del Mar) will introduce the basic biochemistry of zinc, its role in nutrition and its impact on the immune system. Next they will talk about supplementation strategies against infectious diseases. They will also present the results of the recent study of which they are authors in which they propose that supplementing with zinc to patients with COVID-19 with low levels of this element can be a strategy to reduce mortality and recovery time.
