The 2019 conference of the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology took place on Thursday, November 7th at the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB), with nearly 250 people in attendance. This third edition of the BIST Annual Conference focused on human health.

The day kicked off with a welcome by BIST Director Gabby Silberman who, with the help of some of the directors and members of the BIST centres, reviewed the recent achievements at BIST. The new BIST video was also publicly shown to attendees for the first time:

The programme included a dialogue on new approaches to the optogenetic neuronal control. This round-table included speakers Valentina Emiliani (The Vision Institute, Paris), Maria Pia Cosma (CRG, ICREA), Ernest Giralt (IRB Barcelona), and Michael Krieg (ICFO). Edward Boyden (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) was another confirmed speaker but was unfortunately unable to participate due to last minute logistical issues. Michael Krieg gave an introduction to the optogenetics technique in Boyden’s place.

The conference also included presentations by PROBIST Postdoctoral Researchers, BIST International PhD Fellows, and BIST Ignite Grant winners about their multidisciplinary research and a poster session and networking hour.
