Biography
Estibaliz Gómez de Mariscal is an EMBO postdoctoral fellowship in Prof. Ricardo Henriques’ group at Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência in Portugal. Her research focuses on developing machine learning techniques to enable image driven biological discoveries. She has a BSc and MSc in Mathematics, and in 2021, she obtained her PhD at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid in Spain, supervised by Prof. Arrate Muñoz Barrutia and Prof. Denis Wirtz (Johns Hopkins University). During her doctorate, Estibaliz developed image processing methods to characterise cancer cell motility and inter-cellular communication. She is one of the main developers behind user-friendly tools for bioimaging such as deepImageJ, the BioImage Model Zoo, ZeroCostDL4Mic, DeepBacs and DL4MicEverywhere. She has also been an image processing trainer in NEUBIAS, EMBL-EBI, ZIDAS, DL@MBL, EMBO courses and Frontiers in Neurophotonics Summer School @CERVO. A crucial part of her work and dedication is to make computational tools accessible (open, user-friendly, and reusable) and enable more heuristic approaches when using microscopy imaging for scientific discovery.
