Roundtable: Closing the Gender Gap in Research: Challenges Ahead

In recent years, BIST and its centres have undertaken several activities and built programmes for closing the gender gap, with some encouraging results. But collective challenges remain on the road to build a more inclusive and equitable work environment for both female and male scientists. Let’s talk about some of the accomplishments and remaining challenges in our research ecosystem.

Toni Pou
Science Journalist (Diari Ara), Author, Physicist
Toni Pou is a freelance science writer. He is a science editor and writer at the newspaper Ara and writes for other media, such as El Món d’Ahir or Panenka. His book “On el dia dorm amb els ulls oberts” was awarded with the Godó Prize in Investigative Journalism and the Prisma Prize to the best popular science book published in Spain. He is co-director and professor of a postgraduate course on Science Communication at University of Vic and professor of Science Communication at International University of Catalonia. He is one of the cofounders of Eduscopi, a company devoted to science education, outreach and communication. He is consultant of several city halls and administrations in the area of disseminating the ideas and values of science to broader audiences.

Dr. Isabelle Vernos is Chair of the Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Commission at the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG), where she also heads the Cell and Developmental Biology Group.
María García-Parajo
Group Leader, ICREA Research Professor (ICFO)
Dr. María García-Parajo has been involved in many equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives, including the BIST roundtable on empowering women in science within the BIST Community. She leads the Single Molecule Biophotonics Group at the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO) and is a two-time BIST Ignite Award recipient.
Núria Montserrat
Group Leader, ICREA Research Professor (IBEC)
Núria Montserrat leads the Pluripotency for Organ Regeneration Group at the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC). She has been part of many initiatives to promote gender equality, including the BIST roundtable on empowering women in science within the BIST community.
Mónica H. Pérez-Temprano
Group Leader (ICIQ)
Dr. Mónica H. Pérez-Temprano is part of the BIST Mothers of Science programme selection panel. The programme aims to help powerful women willing to improve their leadership skills to take a step forward in their careers and become role models for future generations. She is also a Group Leader at the Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia (ICIQ).

Platform Leader (ICN2)
Dr. Néus Domingo is part of the Equal Opportunities Committee at the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2), where she is also a platform leader.
Neus Prats
Core Facility Manager (IRB Barcelona)
Dr. Neus Prats has been involved in several equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives, such as the BIST roundtable on empowering women in science within the BIST Community. She is also a Core Facility Manager at the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona).
Núria Bayó
Head of Academic Programmes & Organisational Effectiveness (BIST)
Núria Bayó leads a variety of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion programmes at the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology. She has put into motion the BIST Mothers of Science programme, and the BIST roundtable on empowering women in the BIST Community, among others.
