ICREA Research Professor Jose Antonio Garrido, Group Leader of the ICN2 Advanced Electronic Materials and Devices Group, received one of the awards in the Fundación Ramón Areces awards gala on March 2nd in Madrid.
Fundación Ramón Areces celebrated on March 2nd the ceremony to announce the projects awarded through the XVIII edition of the Ayudas a la Investigación en Ciencias de la Vida y de la Materia. Fifty new projects, involving 274 researchers, will receive a part of the over 5 million Euros devoted to support those selected Spanish researches over the next three years.
ICREA Research Professor Jose Antonio Garrido, Group Leader at the ICN2 Advanced Electronic Materials and Devices Group, received one of the awards in the gala. His selected project is entitled “Graphene-based flexible neural interfaces for the peripheral nervous system”. ICN2 Director, Prof. Pablo Ordejón, also attended this ceremony conducted by Florencio Lasaga, President of the Foundation, and Carmen Vela, Secretary of State for Research, Development and Innovation (Spanish Government).
Prof. Garrido is co-leading the biomedical devices work package of the Graphene Flagship, one of the biggest European research initiatives to date. Together with his group he is coordinating initiatives to explore brain-machine interfaces with a therapeutic potential. He presented innovative electronic retina prostheses in the last edition of the Graphene Experience Zone at the Barcelona Mobile World Congress and is also leading the european project called BrainCom, which will develop a new generation of cortical implants for speech neural prostheses applications.
With the support of the Fundación Ramón Areces, this excellent researcher and his research group at ICN2 will push forward the boundaries of graphene-based flexible neural interfaces. In the last 10 years the foundation has devoted up to 23 million Euros in research projects dedicated to life and materials sciences, showing its commitment with the advancement of science and the Spanish research community.
