Dr. Núria Montserrat, a principal investigator at the BIST Community centre IBEC, has been selected to lead the Ministry of Research and Universities in the new government of the Generalitat de Catalunya. This appointment recognises her outstanding scientific career and her commitment to research and innovation.
Dr. Montserrat, internationally renowned for her pioneering work in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, has been a key figure at IBEC and in the BIST Community. As an ICREA research professor and leader of the Pluripotency for Organ Regeneration group at IBEC, she has spearheaded projects that have significantly contributed to advancing knowledge in organ regeneration, with potential applications in personalised medicine.
Núria Montserrat is a member of the Council for Research and Innovation of Catalonia (CORICAT), the government’s advisory body for making strategic decisions in these areas, coordinator of the Biobanks and Biomodels platform at the Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII), and deputy director of translational research at IBEC.
Dr. Montserrat has been recognised with numerous awards throughout her career, most notably the prestigious National Research Award for Young Talent, granted by the Generalitat de Catalunya, which acknowledges her innovative contributions in the field of bioengineering. She is also a member of EMBO, the prestigious network that brings together some of the world’s brightest life sciences researchers. These accolades are a testament to her significant impact on science at both national and international levels.
With this appointment, Prof. Núria Montserrat will take over from the outgoing minister, Prof. Joaquim Nadal. We are confident that her leadership and experience will be crucial in strengthening the country’s research system and positioning Catalonia as an international leader in science and technology.
