When frontier research pushes the boundaries of knowledge, it paves the way for innovations that provide solutions to unmet needs.
The BIST Scientific Community has a significant track record of fostering innovation. With the assistance of the BIST centres’ Knowledge and Technology Transfer (KTT) offices, BIST Community researchers have translated their discoveries into approximately 250 active patent families and created 51 spin-off companies. These ventures have collectively raised more than €240 million in private and public funds and are creating a significant number of qualified jobs.
The BIST Innovation Commission, comprising the seven heads of KTT, leads the community’s cooperative efforts in translating research outcomes into benefits for society. They identify and find solutions to common needs, and provide specialised training for researchers, with initiatives such as the BIST-ESADE From Science to Business Course. In this way, researchers are supported not only by their centre’s KTT offices but also by the collaborative efforts of the BIST Community more broadly.
