The Government of Catalonia has today given a final boost to make the BIST community building focused on multidisciplinary research in precision medicine, at the Ciutadella of Knowledge (Ciutadella del Coneixement, in Catalan) in Barcelona, a reality. The chosen strategy, together with the Barcelona City Council and Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST) itself, is to entrust the promotion of the building to the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB) consortium, which includes both public administrations. This will deepen synergies within what will become a leading biomedical research and innovation hub in Southern Europe. This is a highly valuable agreement that will make it possible for the building to be operational by 2028.
The BIST precision medicine building will bring together around one thousand researchers from five of the seven research centres within the BIST community: the entire Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona), half of the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC), and various research groups from the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2), the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO), and the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG), the latter already based at the PRBB. This will mark the first time that BIST research groups from complementary disciplines will share a common space, fostering true multidisciplinarity and creating a vibrant environment for scientific collaboration and innovation.
This building will represent nearly two-thirds (20,600 m²) of the total construction planned for the block known as the antic Mercat del Peix (former Barcelona’s fish market) , which will also include the new building for the Institute of Evolutionary Biology (6,500 m²) and a building for Pompeu Fabra University (7,300 m²). Foundation work on the site began in early 2023 and is expected to be completed by autumn 2025, at which point construction of the above-ground buildings will begin. BIST will co-lead the development phase in partnership with PRBB and, upon completion, will take on the scientific leadership.
The project originated in 2019 when BIST launched the initiative to co-locate its biomedical research groups in a single, purpose-built facility. The internationally renowned architecture studio Barozzi Veiga won the design competition and has developed the technical project. To date, the building’s development has been supported by a legacy left by Ms M. Àngels Recolons, a contribution from the “la Caixa” Foundation, and funding from the Ministry of Science and Innovation of the Spanish Government, as well as support from the Government of Catalonia and the Barcelona City Council.
The Catalan Government’s agreement, announced today, comes at a crucial time and ensures the necessary funding to turn this transformative vision into reality.

La Generalitat dona l’impuls definitiu a l’edifici BIST per a la recerca multidisciplinària en medicina de precisió
La Generalitat de Catalunya ha donat avui un impuls definitiu per fer possible l’edifici de la comunitat BIST a la Ciutadella del Coneixement de Barcelona enfocat a la recerca multidisciplinària en medicina de precisió. La fórmula triada, junt amb l’Ajuntament de Barcelona i el propi Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST), ha estat encarregar la promoció de l’edifici al consorci Parc de Recerca Biomèdica de Barcelona (PRBB), on estan presents les dues administracions, de manera que s’aprofundeixi en les sinergies del que serà un hub de recerca i innovació biomèdica líder al sud d’Europa. Es tracta d’un acord de gran valor que farà possible que el 2028 l’edifici ja estigui en funcionament.
L’edifici BIST en medicina de precisió aplegarà prop d’un miler d’investigadors de cinc dels set centres de recerca de la comunitat BIST: la totalitat de l’Institut de Recerca Biomèdica de Barcelona (IRB Barcelona), la meitat de l’Institut de Bioenginyeria de Catalunya, i diversos grups de recerca de l’Institut de Nanociència i Nanotecnologia (ICN2), de l’Institut de Ciències Fotòniques (ICFO), i del Centre de Regulació Genòmica (CRG), aquest darrer basat al propi PRBB. Serà la primera vegada que grups de recerca de la comunitat BIST que treballen en àrees científiques complementàries estaran en un mateix espai, el que tindrà repercussions en la multidisciplinarietat dels projectes de recerca que s’hi desenvolupin.
Aquest edifici representa quasi dos terços (20.600m2) del total de construcció que es durà a terme a l’illa anomenada antic Mercat del Peix, on també hi haurà el nou edifici de l’Institut de Biologia Evolutiva (6.500m2) i un edifici de la Universitat Pompeu Fabra (7.300m2). Les obres dels fonaments conjunts estan en marxa des d’inicis de 2023 i es calcula que es finalitzaran la tardor d’enguany, 2025, quan es podrà començar la construcció dels edificis en el sobre rasant. El BIST treballarà amb el PRBB en el pilotatge de les obres i, un cop finalitzades, s’encarregarà de la direcció científica de l’edifici.
El BIST va iniciar el 2019 la iniciativa de construir un edifici per aplegar grups de recerca de la comunitat BIST que treballen en àmbits biomèdics, i va fer un concurs arquitectònic que va guanyar el prestigiós despatx Barozzi Veiga, que ha elaborat el projecte tècnic. Fins avui, l’impuls de l’edifici ha comptat amb el suport d’un llegat deixat per la Sra. M. Àngels Recolons, amb una aportació de la Fundació “la Caixa”, i amb una aportació del Ministeri de Ciència i Innovació del Govern espanyol, així com del suport de la Generalitat de Catalunya i l’Ajuntament de Barcelona. L’acord que avui ha pres la Generalitat, en el moment clau del procés d’impuls de l’edifici, és fonamental en tant que garanteix els fons necessaris per a fer-lo possible.
