Five researchers working at BIST centres have been awarded the prestigious 2019 European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grants this month.
The European Research Council announced the 2019 winners of the ERC Starting Grants this month. These prestigious grants are awarded to talented early-career scientist to help them build their own teams and perform pioneering research in their fields. The grants, worth €603 million in total, are part of the EU Research and Innovation programme, Horizon 2020.
Among the winners in this round are five researchers working at three centres of the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST), bringing the total number of ERC grants received by BIST researchers up to 113, including 40 Starting Grants, 26 Advanced Grants, 32 Proof of Concept Grants, 2 Syngergy Grants, and 13 Consolidator Grants.
The BIST awardees are:
Dmitri Efetov of The Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO) for his project entitled “SuperTwist: Understanding unconventional superconductivity in twisted flatlands”
Loris Rizzello of the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) for his project entitled “PANDORA: Pandemics Outbreaks Rationalized: towards a universal therapy to eliminate intracellular
pathogens and drug resistance”
Sara Sdelci of the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) for her project entitled “EPICAMENTE: At the epigenetics-cancer metabolism interface”
Arnau Sebe-Pedros of the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) for his project entitled “EvoCellMap: Tracing the origin and early evolution of animal cell type regulation with genomics and single-cell approaches”
Nicholas Stroustrup of the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) for his project entitled “SYSAGING: A platform for rapidly mapping the molecular and systemic dynamics of aging”
