Fifth edition of the BIST Ignite Call now open!

By December 10, 2020BIST

The 2020 edition of the BIST Ignite Programme, which fosters multidisciplinary research among the BIST community, is accepting applications from December 10, 2020 to March 1, 2021.

The BIST Ignite Programme awards excellent, multidisciplinary projects within the BIST community. Every year we launch a call for BIST Ignite project proposals and select five winners that receive 20.000€ of funding to jumpstart their research collaboration. The call is competitive and successful projects always involve new collaborations among researchers within the BIST centres, share knowledge among different scientific fields, and address novel research topics.

The current edition of the BIST Ignite Call is open from December 10, 2020 to March 1, 2021.

An external scientific committee will select the winning teams, who will have ten months to develop their ideas. Projects will then move to the second phase of the programme, where the two most promising projects will receive BIST Ignite Awards, which come with an additional 50.000€ of funding to continue research.

The projects that were selected in last year’s call and are currently working on their first phase research will receive an extension until August 2021 to complete their work and submit final reports. This is due to the complications and additional pressures put on researchers during the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2021 BIST Ignite Awards will thus be announced in Autumn of 2021.

More about the BIST Ignite Programme:
Submissions must be sent through our online submission system and project proposals must involve at least two groups working at different BIST centres, have a multidisciplinary approach to solve new or unsolved questions, promoting cross-fertilisation across disciplines, and providing new insights to give an impulse to further push the collaboration forward. We welcome applications from Group Leaders and Postdoctoral Researchers working at or affiliated with one or more of the seven BIST centres (CRG, IBEC, ICFO, ICIQ, ICN2, IFAE, IRB Barcelona).

Facts and Figures:
To date, 23 projects have been funded through the programme’s first phase and eight have received BIST Ignite Awards. Over 800.000€ have been granted and more than 170 researchers have already been involved. Many of the BIST Ignite project teams have achieved cutting-edge disruptive research results leading to long-term projects, won awards, and fostered impactful new collaborations. Some recent BIST Ignite success stories are published on the programme webpage.
