STEAMConf Barcelona 2025

Event Details

10th International Learning Conference

For over a decade, STEAMConf Barcelona has served as a global platform for showcasing cutting-edge, research-informed practices in STEAM education and project-based learning (PBL). Held annually in Barcelona, the conference brings together leading voices in education from around the world.

The Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST) collaborates in the organisation of STEAMConf, in line with its mission to connect frontier research with society by fostering dialogue between experimental research and educational practice.

Members of the BIST Community will contribute to the programme with a variety of activities within STEAMConf:

Are women role models in science and technology needed in rural and high-complexity schools? #científiques

Date and time: Thursday, November 6th, 11:00
Place: Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Aula 40.039
Language: Catalan (auxiliary: Spanish and English)

We invite you to reflect and engage in dialogue on the importance of encouraging scientific vocations among pupils aged 11 to 16. Can girls envision their future as engineers, computer scientists or physicists if they don’t know any women close to them who work in these fields? #Científiques is an initiative by the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation (FCRI) and the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST) that, since 2019, has brought female scientists and technologists into 6th grade and 1st-year secondary school classrooms, to provide boys and girls with real and relatable role models. We will share experiences with some of the programme’s organisers, with researchers who have visited schools in rural and high-complexity areas, and with teachers from these centres — all with the aim of jointly exploring how to strengthen and improve the impact of #científiques.

With the participation of the researchers (#científiques) Fanny Bauman (ICN2), Clàudia Brito (CRG), Catalina Coll (UB), Janet van der Graf (IBEC) and Clara Vilches (ICFO), and the teachers Marta Casado (Escola La Sínia, Vic), Úrsula Olmo and Alícia Morlans (ZER Alt Segrià), Alba Masagué (Institut Joan Amigó i Callau, L’Espluga de Francolí) and Felip Lorenzo (STEAMcat).

Organized by Zoila Babot and Míriam Navarro (BIST) and Verena Blumen (Institut Angeleta Ferrer)

Celebrate Quantum with ICFO Maciej Lewenstein Quantum School for Teachers: a platform to introduce quantum physics to the classroom

Date and time: Friday, November 7th, 9:00
Place: Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Aula 40.S14
Language: Catalan (auxiliary: Spanish and English)

2025 has been designated by UNESCO as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, highlighting the importance of this field and its future growth. In this session, we will explore a platform offering a wide range of content on quantum science and technology. Educators will find audiovisual materials, practical activities, and resources aimed at students from 3rd year of ESO to 2nd year of Bachillerato. Join a practical demonstration!

Organized by ICFO members: Lucia Castillo Garcia, Lydia Sanmarti-Vila, Stefano Pedarra and Alice La Porta

Explore me! The conversation with science is in your hands!

Date and time: Friday, November 7th, 15:00
Place: Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Aula 40.047B
Language: Spanish (auxiliary: English)

Investiga’m” is a programme of the BIST Community designed to bring its frontier research closer to classrooms and the wider public. The aim of Investiga’m is to facilitate learning about scientific topics and about scientific research itself—how it is done and who carries it out. It does so through its own active, inquiry-based learning methodology that places students’ curiosity at the centre.

In this workshop, three BIST Community centres (IFAE, ICN2, and CRG) will present the methodology by putting it into practice and sharing experiences, so that it can applied it in classrooms and beyond.

Organized by Pep Freixanet (IFAE), Marta Solís (CRG) and Chema Arcos (ICN2)
