General ethical issues in the management of infectious disease outbreaks are well known, but there is only limited preparation regarding the various ethical aspects for times of epidemics. There are good documents for managing ethical issues in infectious disease outbreaks, but hardly any practical tools for the physician at the bedside. Pandemic is not pandemic. Since the avian influenza and recent outbreaks like Ebola, which represent the main background for most recent ethics guidance documents many topics have dramatically changed. We face many new ethical issues in a globalized world with the possibilities of the internet.
