Günther Dissertori of the Institute for Particle Physics and Astrophysics (ETH Zürich) will give a talk as part of the 2019/2020 BIST Colloquium series on February 3, 2020 at the Institute for High Energy Physics (IFAE), a BIST centre. The colloquium is part of the BIST Master curriculum but is also open and free for anyone interested in coming. If you would like to attend, please send us an email at communication@bist.eu.
Title: Instruments for the exploration of the Universe and of the Brain
Abstract: In this lecture I will give an introduction to the physics questions that are studied at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. In particular, I will explain the importance of the Higgs boson, how it was discovered and what comes next in the field of High Energy Physics. Finally, I will give a few concrete examples of applications from particle physics instrumentation in the field of (bio-)medical imaging, in particular Positron Emission Tomography.
