Dr. Joan Massagué, Member of the BIST Board of Trustees and Director of the Sloan Kettering Institute, received an honorary degree from the Ramon Llull University (URL) yesterday, April 24th, in Barcelona.

Dr. Massagué is one of the world’s top authorities in cancer research. Since 2014 he has been the Director of the Sloan Kettering Institute in New York, one of the most prominent cancer research centres in the world. His work has focused on studying signal mechanisms that are essential for the normal development of tissues and that are changed when cancer is present. His work has also identified genes and mechanisms that are involved in the spreading of a number of types of cancer cells to the bone, lung, and brain. This work has shed light on the basis for cancer lethality and opened the door to new treatment options.

At the ceremony yesterday, Dr. Emilia Sánchez, Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the Ramon LLull University, spoke on the merits of Dr. Massagué.
