The BIST community is partly organised around six permanent commissions to make joint decisions and align the initiatives of the seven centres as a community, working towards medium- and long-term objectives with the support of the BIST Core Team. The commissions bring together the people responsible for the following areas:
- Communication Commission
- Health & Safety Commission
- Innovation Commission
- Open Science Commission
- Outreach Commission
- People Commission
To address clearly defined short- or medium-term objectives, temporary BIST Taskforces could also be established by the Executive Committee. These are formed by appointing individuals to represent their centres and collaborate towards a common goal. Once this objective is achieved, the taskforce is dissolved.
As of July 2025, active taskforces focus on:
- The Antic Mercat del Peix Hub
- Precision Medicine Joint Initiative
- The Ignite Programme
Each summer, members of all these groups gather at the BIST Meet-up for Commissions and Other Groups to share their progress and future goals.
