How our cells make proteins under stress (activitat en anglès)

DNA -> RNA -> Protein is the central dogma of biology. us to discover new therapeutic targets for a wide range of pathological conditions (the genes), the RNA is the working copy of the recipe you’d like to cook that day, and the protein is the final baked cake. The process that allows the cell to “translate” the RNA copy into a finished protein is called Translation. For a long time, scientists thought this was just a simple, unregulated process. However, that is not true! Just like a chef doesn’t cook the same sweets every day and makes changes based on the season, customer demand, or available ingredients, cells also use this step to rapidly regulate gene expression. This Translation Control is essential, for example, in situations where the cells need to quickly adapt to a new stimulus, such as upon an environmental stress.

Therefore, decoding how this translational control system is maintained in health, and why it malfunctions in disease, is absolutely crucial. This knowledge will directly enable us to discover new therapeutic targets for a wide range of pathological conditions.
