The Barcelona City Council has launched the 2020 Awards for Scientific Research on Urban Challenges in the City of Barcelona. The call is open to all members of the scientific community, up to the age of 40, and in any area of knowledge. The purpose is to promote young talent in Barcelona and to support innovative projects that re-think the city’s model. Applications must address tackling urban challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. The deadline to apply is November 9th, 2020.
In view of the socio-economic, health and environmental crisis resulting from Covid-19, the Barcelona City Council is appealing to the local scientific research ecosystem to seek solutions to the challenges facing the city of Barcelona and to find new fields of research, processes, services, or methods to help reinvent the city in our new context, as well as innovatively speed up its recovery.
The call is targeted, openly and without any constraints as to format or method, to those people in the research community who, either individually or collectively, wish to help create ideas, innovative answers, and applications to the main challenges facing Barcelona as a city and a metropolitan conurbation.
The projects targeted by this call must fall into one or more of the following subject areas:
• Population density, public space and social welfare
• Social welfare in relation to housing and basic services
• Sustainable mobility for people and goods
• Climate emergency and the city
• Quality ageing, children and the city
• The city and visitors
• New productive models and spaces in the city
• Sustainable food and the city
• Technology and improvement of public services
The call has a total budget of 1.2 million euros, which will be distributed among the various winning projects, with awards ranging from 30,000 euros to 100,000 euros each.
It is open to projects and research in the fields of social sciences and the humanities, in addition to natural and experimental sciences, the exact and formal sciences and engineering and applied sciences.
The deadline for submitting projects is November 9th, 2020. The winning projects will be published before the end of the year.
