BIST will have a workshop at the 4YFN Exhibition at the 2021 Mobile World Congress

By June 21, 2021BIST

BIST will be part of the 4 Years From Now exhibition within the 2021 Mobile World Congress, with the workshop From Lab to Market: Showcasing Three Deep Tech Startups.

The Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST) has organised a workshop in the 4 Years From Now – 4YFN – exhibition within the framework of the 2021 World Mobile Congress. The session, From Lab to Market: Showcasing Three Deep Tech Startups, will take place on June 29, 2021 from 9:30 to 10:30 am at Fira Gran Via and will feature three scientific entrepreneurs from multidisciplinary backgrounds who lead Deep Tech spin-offs from three BIST centres.

Deep Tech startups create disruptive solutions founded on unique, protected, and hard-to-reproduce scientific discoveries or engineering innovations. While scientific entrepreneurs have the same challenges as all other entrepreneurs, there are some unique differences that they need to face and overcome.

In this workshop, participants will learn from speakers who represent industries as diverse as quantum computing, photoreactors for photocatalytic chemical reactions and computing technologies for drug discovery.

The speakers are:

Victor Canivell, Co-Founder and CEO of Qilimanjaro Quantum Tech

Victor Canivell is Co-Founder and CEO of Qilimanjaro Quantum Tech, the quantum computing spin-off from the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), the Institute of High Energy Physics (IFAE, a BIST centre), and the University of Barcelona (UB). Prior to Qilimanjaro, Victor spent over fifteen years as CEO driving high tech startups in the software security SaaS and bioinformatics markets, all of which were later acquired. Prior to his entrepreneurship career, Victor held general management and VP roles for US IT multinationals at both European and Spanish levels over a twenty-year period (Hewlett Packard, Silicon Graphics & Cray Research, 3Com, PerkinElmer). Victor has also held business consultant roles for several other high tech startups, as well as for the European Commission H2020 programme. Victor has an MBA from ESADE and a PhD in Physics from the University of Barcelona.

Esther Alza, Co-Founder and CEO of Treellum Technologies

Esther is an organic and medicinal chemist by training as well as an entrepreneur. She completed her PhD in organic chemistry, asymmetric catalysis, and flow chemistry at the Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia (ICIQ, a BIST centre). In her more than 10 years of experience, Dr Alza has always followed the principles of green chemistry and applying science for a sustainable world. Her expertise includes the development of proprietary technologies and methodologies related to catalysis and flow chemistry for innovative organic synthesis and medicinal chemistry, incorporating novel tools like automatisation, AI, and additive manufacturing.

Ezequiel Mas, CEO at Nostrum Biodiscovery

Ezequiel Mas has a BSc in Biochemistry and Biology, and an MSc in Neurosciences from the University of Barcelona (UB). After doing a PhD and postdoc in Biomedicine, he started his career in management as Scientific Project Manager at CIRCE Crystal Engineering with the aim of coordinating and advertising Virtual Screening technologies to predict new cocrystals and polymorphs of small molecules. He then became Research Project Manager at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, where he was responsible for the management of the whole life cycle of the Life Science Department, the Education and Training Department, as well as in charge of the pre and postdoctoral personnel fellowships. After doing an Executive MBA in the EAE Business School, he started as COO in Nostrum Biodiscover, where he became CEO in March 2020.

If you are interested in attending the workshop and are already registered for 4YFN – MWC 2021, you will have access to it. If you would like to attend the workshop but are not registered at 4YFN – MWC 2021, please get in touch with us as soon as possible at communication@bist.eu. BIST has a limited number of passes and will be pleased to send you an invitation. Please note that this will be done on a first come, first served basis.
