BIST and Biocat strengthen their collaboration for d·HEALTH 2021

By July 20, 2020BIST

The Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST) and Biocat are working together for a second year in the Biocat d·HEALTH Programme, this time with a strengthened collaboration which includes 50% off tuition cost for two members of the BIST Community, and participation in the BIST Career Workshop and info session.

Design Health Barcelona (d·HEALTH Barcelona) is a six-month full-time postgraduate programme aimed at developing future entrepreneurs and healthcare innovators. It draws inspiration from Stanford University’s prestigious Biodesign Fellowship, and guides multidisciplinary groups of participants through a full cycle of innovation, from identifying a business idea, to designing and prototyping a viable solution, to developing a business model, and searching for funding.

d·HEALTH Barcelona is now accepting applications for its eight edition, taking place from January to June 2021.

For this edition, Biocat is offering two spots at half the usual tuition cost to members of the BIST Community. The BIST-Biocat collaboration will also include the participation of Biocat members in the BIST Career Workshop taking place later this year, and an information session for interested members.

In d·HEALTH Barcelona, fellows will learn about the ecosystem of the healthcare sector, become familiar with medical technology and the life sciences market, and hear about business management and development from more than 50 international experts from Stanford, Silicon Valley, and elsewhere. Fellows will also gain valuable innovation skills including critical thinking, creativity, design thinking, teamwork (groups will have members with scientific, business, engineering, and design backgrounds), rhetoric, and strategic business vision, among others.

Graduates’ success stories

Ninety-five percent of fellows that have graduated from the programme found work in the healthcare sector, and 30% now run their own companies. Nine people working at BIST centres have participated in the programme over the years, including postdocs, research interns, project managers, a senior researcher, and an academic officer. All of them have since transitioned to prominent positions in healthcare such as entrepreneurs, innovation technicians, consultants, and tech transfer officers and managers, among others. Three BIST members who were postdocs at the time of completing the programme have now all founded their own spin-off companies. One such company is Breaz, which aims to create solutions to help doctors and nurses in the early detection of COPD to allow large population screening in primary care.

More information and application instructions can be found on the Biocat d·HEALTH website.

If you are interested in taking advantage of the 50% discount for BIST members, please send an email with the subject “Fellowship d·HEALTH 2021” to fellows@bist.eu and include your contact information.
