BIST Community celebrates the graduation of the sixth class of the Master of Multidisciplinary Research in Experimental Sciences and welcomes the new cohort students.

In a ceremony that took place at La Pedrera Auditorium last week, BIST celebrated the graduation of the 2022/2023 class of the Master of Multidisciplinary Research in Experimental Sciences (MMRES), the sixth promotion since the Master Programme was launched back in September 2017. The ceremony brought together the graduating students and their families, and the incoming cohort of 21 students who had met for the first time on that same morning.

The afternoon kicked off with the welcoming words of Lluís Farrés, Director of Knowledge, Education, and Research at Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera, and an introduction by Prof. Joan Guinovart, Academic Director of the BIST Dolors Aleu Graduate Centre. “This Master gives you the opportunity to spend plenty of time in the lab”, said Prof. Guinovart to the new students, while encouraging them to make the most of the Master and enjoy.

Following the ceremony, Dr. Robert Sewell, co-director of MMRES, and Dr. Míriam Navarro, MMRES coordinator, delved into the achievements of the graduating class. This diverse and international group, comprising 43% of students from around the world, showcased their talents through multidisciplinary research collaborations across various BIST Community Centres, as well as institutions like EMBL, VHIO, IBE, and URV in Barcelona. Dr. Sewell emphasized that the Master’s programme had proven to be an excellent launchpad for scientific careers, both in Barcelona and globally, with many alumni pursuing doctoral studies in prestigious institutions. Addressing to the gratuating class, Dr. Navarro said “We firmly believe that the best learning occurs through active engagement and you have done it, not only doing research but also devising and delivering outreach activities such as the podcast Not Only Pippeting or the Science Hackathon”

The ceremony followed by a keynote talk by Dr. Stephanie Wculek, Junior Group Leader at IRB Barcelona since February this year. Dr. Wculek not only shared her science in immunology, but also gave some advice to the young students: “Ask yourself a few questions: how can I learn from people that think differently? is the environment supportive? is my supervisor my boss or my mentor?”

After all the graduating students had been to stage, three of the students reviewed the best moments of the academic year, demonstrating to the incoming students and their families, that not only they’ve learned and work hard, but also made new friends and discovered together many places and foods.

BIST General Director, Dr. Eduard Vallory, closed the event stating “A mixture of science, having fun, friendship…. that’s what the BIST Master is about”.
